It has been reported in various news sources in recent days that the Vatican has issued a world-wide 'offensive' to stop the legal sanctioning of homosexual marriages.
While this is by no means an American institution, I believe the impact on this country is evident. I would like to hear, from Catholics and non-Catholics alike, what opinions of this are out there, with regard to the Constitution and the American legislative proccess.

The name and institution of marriage needs to be kept for the union of a man and women.

Let`s call the union of homosexuals something else like homarriage, comarriage or pairrage. LOL!

They need laws and rules that apply to their unions. Make them go thru divorces too if they decide to split up.

And then if they are together for what, is it 7 years they will have a common law homarriage?

Let's look at this in a stark light: right now the laws limit who can marry who based on who they are sleeping with! If two people are in love, then why not should they be allowed to marry?

I had always thought that, in America as in Canada, all men (as in humans) were created equal, at least in the eyes of the law. I think that not allowing homosexuals to marry merely proves that (as Orwell wrote) 'all animals are created equal, but some are more equal than others.' That sounds pretty stupid!

As the late, former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau said more than 20 years ago: 'The Federal Government has no place in the bedrooms of the nation.'

If two people are in love, give them all the same rights and limitations as everyone else. Besides, isn't marriage about love and not just sex?

Why call it something else? If it's the same rules, restrictions, priveleges, and process, then what's the point?

When one looks at the history of marriage as a whole, one can easily see that the idea of marrying for love is relatively new. I find it interesting that opponents of gay marriage seem to overlook the fact that when it comes to 'making a mockery of the sanctity of marriage', no one has done a better job than those in the church.

Who and in which church are people making a mockery of marriage?

I was mainly referring to the church's (Christian) sanctioning of arranged marriages, forced marriages, allowance of rape and adultry on the husbands part, etc.
What do you think about the issue in the first post?

Well, growing up I was taught that homosexuals were bad people. It was a choice that they had made to live that lifestyle. They were sexual perverts and children were in danger in their presence. That they were disobeying GOD`s law.

THEN, I came to realize that no one would want the negative atitiudes and comments thrust on them from "normal society" unless they were truly homosexual in their makeup as a person. So then I decided that they were born that way but that didn`t mean they needed to follow that life style. It was their cross to bear, something they needed to overcome, sort of like alcoholics, overweight people, a person with a mental illness, etc. A trial they to test them.

Now I am not sure what I believe, we have many homosexuals and a few lesbians in our neighborhood. They are wonderful neighbors, helpful, caring, appear to have be monogomous and friendly.

My favorite cousin was homosexual, he died of aids about 7 years ago. My very best friend from childhood, was homosexual and he died 5 years from aids also. We had so much fun together.

Oh so I am not sure. I need to ponder a bit longer.

Is someone's belief that homosexuality is 'wrong', is that enough to justify laws discriminating against homosexuals?

R.S., I'm not real sure what you're trying to say, but I am wondering, what would you do if you couldn't love your wife? Well, publicly at least? Try it sometime, try talking about the happiness you feel with her without reveling her gender. Seriously, just try it. Try using gender-nuetral terms (you may need to use non-gendered plural terms like 'they' and 'them' alot). Let me know what your friends have to say - I'm willing to bet they just want you to say what's on your mind and be up-front with them. Interesting.
