Today, the Canadian Press reports that there is trouble and unrest in Iran. The CP reports that the unrest originally began as a student protest against privatizing universities and has snowballed into anti-government protests across the country.

However, a little bit of searching finds the Iranian Government has accused the USA of having a hand in these protests and violence. Iran is now surrounded on three sides by the US military machine, is being accused by the US as having a non-peaceful nuclear industry (but is, of course, willing to allow inspections under certain conditions.)

Bush, again quite naturally, is again spouting off about his ideas about 'freedom' and how it should be implimented across the world. After all, now Afganistan and Iraq are becoming democracies, why not Iran?

What concerns me is what Bush isn't telling us. Did you know that the US military is constructing not one, but TWO, new bases in western Afganistan, not far from the border with Iran? (Toronto Globe and Mail, early May.)

Get ready, Iran. America is quickly taken it's place as the unwanted salesman at the door during dinnertime, peddling it's idea of 'freedom' in the form of an outdated 17th-century document. And the salesman won't leave until you sign the check, and if you don't do what he says he'll hit you with that big stick he carries. Soon you will occupied, not by troops but by Subway restaurants, McDonalds, Ford dealerships, and quite possibly the formation of the Middle-Eastern Football League. Aren't you glad you have America to watch out for your 'freedom'?

Bring it on, folks. It's been pretty quiet around here lately.

Export... yeah it has been quiet in here. Born American seems to still be growing. A new board, but I'm being patient with it too.

I've even been referring friends to it.

Is it possible that Bush (and the rest of us in American ) think that everyone in the world should be living their lives like us? It simply isn't possible. Other countries don't even want to live like us here in the West. Forcing ideals and ways of life on them is just going to make them run in the opposite direction.

Look what Iran did to the U.S. in the 70ies. ( and into the 80ies ) They better just be lucky Jimmy Carter was our President, because i can't think of one other President of the U.S. in history that wouldnt have wiped them out for taking and holding hundreds of our people hostage for a year. ( This Government of Iran was started by the same kind of college riots they are having right now. Except last time they took American men, women and kids hostage because Iran was so friendly with us. This time its on them so i hope they over throw the no good losers. By the way, the day Regan was sworn in and Carter was out the people in Iran sent our people home, and not for ransom like they wanted, but because they knew Regan was going to kick them back into the stoneage they still live in.

I dunno, Toxic. I actually think that the majority of U.S. Presidents wouldn't "have wiped them out for taking and holding hundreds of our people hostage for a year." Remember that this was a pretty tough time way back when. Khomeni was in exile in France, and if I'm not mistaken there were more than a few domestic issues occuring in the States and the Middle East at the time. Revenge by America on a major scale at the time for the hostage-taking would only have inflamed the situation and probably would have eventually meant the extension of the Cold War between the superpowers and potential further conflict.

Alas, this potential conflict can be (somewhat) traced back to Napolean. He had invaded Russia directly to the outskirts of Moscow, and Hitler later did nearly the same thing in World War II. After the War, the Russians responded by gobbling up all or most of the countries on its borders, including Afganistan and Iraq (remember them?) The Americans, which had occupied Iran along with the Allies during the War to maintain fuel supplies to forces in Africa and Europe, saw that the Soviets were doing this and it's all recent history from there.

Kinda makes one wonder if Humanity has ever seen a moment of peace on this planet, eh?
